Wolves boss McCarthy explains shopping in foreign transfer market

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has explained why they're shopping in the European transfer market.

Wolves signed Scottish, Irish, Belgian and French players this summer whilst re-signing an Algerian.

“We look at whether they’re worth it, whether they’re good enough, whether they can play and whether we can get them in the team but I’m convinced it knackers the England team up,” McCarthy said.

“There are only 38 per cent of English players in the Premier League, so the England manager can only pick 38 players out of every 100, rather than say 78 out of 100 as it may be with other countries. It’s not good. Foreign players are cheaper in comparison, even though the top clubs spend millions and millions on players such as Yaya Toure, so there’s another side to it.

“We might look at a Championship team and their best players, but it costs a lot of dough. Look at Birmingham last year, they spent £5m on Roger Johnson. We spent good money on Kevin Doyle, but we knew he was a Premier League player.”
