Wolves boss McCarthy defends selection after Palace draw

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy felt they had enough chances to win their 2-2 FA Cup draw with Crystal Palace.

Palace could count themselves unlucky not to have won the tie outright against a below-par Wolves side.

Alan Lee silenced the 14,449 inside Molineux when he headed Palace into the lead as early as the second minute, although David Jones' strike levelled matters before the interval.

Darren Ambrose registered his 14th goal of the season in the 49th minute courtesy of a well-taken free-kick.

And that looked to be enough to secure Palace's place in the fifth round for the first time in seven seasons.

That was until Ronald Zubar salvaged a draw late on with a sublime turn and volley that was fit to win any encounter.

McCarthy's seven changes from the side that lost 2-0 to Wigan last weekend may have had something to do with it but he still sent out an XI more than capable of seeing off their Championship opponents.

The two sides will go again on Tuesday February 2, and McCarthy said: "It's better than being out of the competition.

"I thought we had some chances to win it in the second half and Crystal Palace played well.

"We didn't get anything other than what I expected from them.

"What I got from us, though, at the start of the first and second half is not what I expect.

"We've had to have a scrap, it was a cup tie.

"We've had to work harder than necessary just to get a draw."

He added: "Of course our best chance has gone but we drew away at Everton, we beat Spurs away and we drew at Stoke.

"We want to be in the FA Cup, and we are."
