Winterburn not completely convinced about Arsenal defence

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn believes there is still plenty of work to do with Arsene Wenger's current defence.

The Gunners, with plenty of influence from new assistant Steve Bould, received great praise for keeping three clean sheets to kick off the season but have since conceded in six straight matches including their first defeat of the campaign - a 2-1 home loss to Chelsea on Saturday.

Winterburn, who played alongside new defensive coach Steve Bould under George Graham at Arsenal, feels that the transition into a capable defensive outfit is still a little while away suggesting to fans that they could continue to leak goals for the time being.

"The manner of the loss to Chelsea has shaken them up. Those two set plays were terrible. It was like the 'old Arsenal' if you like," Winterburn told talkSPORT.

"But you have to remember that Steve [Bould] had a lot of praise in the first two or three weeks, but I've spoken to him and he's talked about the number of hours we spent on the training ground with George Graham working.

"You don't turn things around in five or six weeks, it will take five or six months and they have to keep working on it. Steve realised when something went wrong there would be questions asked of him rather than all the plaudits he was getting at the start of the season."
