Wilson appointed new manager of Sheff Utd

Sheffield United have announced Danny Wilson as their new manager, their fourth such appointment in the last nine months. The move has angered some Blade fans as Wilson used to play and manage across the city at bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday while also managing in South Yorkshire at Barnsley.

Academy boss John Pemberton is retained while club captain Chris Morgan will be a player-coach.

Wilson, who has previously managed Hartlepool, MK Dons, Bristol City, Wednesday and Barnsley, said: "I feel privileged to become the manager of Sheffield United. The fans, the owner and everyone involved with the club have one thing in common for the Blades - ambition.

"I want to realise their aspirations and bring success to the club as soon as possible. The style of play has been highlighted as an issue by people I have spoken with so far and I feel confident that we will be able to play in a way that supporters will enjoy watching.

"I will have working with me individuals who have a strong knowledge of the club and where it wants to be. I will be shortly appointing an experienced number two and cannot wait to start working with Morgs and Pembo."

Owner Kevin McCabe said: "Danny was at the top of my wanted list for football reasons. It has been a tough and rigorous selection process and I am delighted to say that Danny was the outstanding candidate from the group of potential managers, all with strong profiles and good track records.

"Danny and his team, when it is fully completed, bring enormous experience and knowledge of the game at all levels to the club at this vital time as well as recognising the opportunities surrounding the emergence of our young players and the role they could play next season in our drive to return to the Championship."
