Wilkinson counting on third time lucky for Mariners

After already losing two A-League Grand Finals since the league’s inception, the Central Coast Mariners are intent on making this finals campaign a success.

The Mariners were defeated 1-0 by Sydney FC in the inaugural A-League final in 2005/06 and were unlucky to lose to the Newcastle Jets by the same score line last season.

Mariners skipper Alex Wilkinson was a part of both of those heartbreaking losses and is determined to give his teammates every chance of experiencing premiership success.

“We’ve been in two grand finals so far and lost both of them 1-0,’’ said Wilkinson.

“If we were to make the grand final again this year, it would be heartbreaking to lose again so hopefully it will be third time lucky for us.’’

Mariners striker Matt Simon echoed his captain’s sentiments.

It would mean everything to win. I was involved last year and we lost and some boys have been there from the start and lost both grand finals they’ve been in,’’ said Simon.

“This is the third finals series out of four for the Mariners and the boys are hungry to go one step further.’’
