Wilkins says Chelsea ace Lampard must be England starter

Former Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins feels Frank Lampard must be part of England's Euro plans.

Wilkins wants the 33-year-old to take his hot form onto the international stage - starting with Friday's potentially decisive Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro.

"Frank Lampard is a top professional, and an extremely fit one as well," Wilkins told the Mirror. "He has responded magnificently to the criticism he has had and is in great form.

"With everyone fit and available next summer, I would have him in my midfield with Jack Wilshere, with Steven Gerrard in the holding role.

"I think Gerrard is the finest passer of the ball we have in the country, whether it is short or long. I think he has the ability, the engine and the football nous to play in front of the back four. He can set us going quite quickly.

"People will say, 'He is talking rubbish, because you will lose his goals', but Lampard and Wilshere will score those.

"Lampard has scored 20 goals a season for the last eight years. He does score at international level - you have got to give him his head to get forward.

"And then up front you play Wayne Rooney and two wide players. Apart from David Silva, Ashley Young is the form player in the Premier League this season."
