Wigan Athletic captain Mario Melchiot hopes to be fit to face former club Birmingham City this weekend.

Melchiot spoke of his optimism that he will play on against his former club, and emphasised the need to pick up three points.

"I have a good chance of playing against Birmingham, although it's up to the medical people to make the final decision," he told the Evening Post.

"The injury is feeling better. If I play on Saturday, I'll have only missed one game, but I could have set myself back had I tried to play sooner.

"I'm looking forward to going back as I had a good time at Birmingham.

"Their supporters are up there with the best - they are the 12th man at St Andrews.

"We are looking to win the game as Birmingham are in a similar position to us.

"We need to do better than we have been doing for the last few weeks, so we need all three points."
