Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy has been dropped for the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Sweden.

McCarthy has been axed by Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni.

He said: "I have respect for McCarthy but despite my respect for James, you can't say he is creative. He is good line to line, but he is not creative. I hope he increase his personality. He can get better as he is young enough and in a few years he could be better than Whelan."
