Wigan Athletic were prepared to go the extra yard to sign Spartak Moscow winger Aiden McGeady.

The Wigan Observer says the biggest disappointment of deadline day was McGeady, who at one point looked like he would be arriving from Spartak Moscow for a club-record transfer fee.

It's believed Latics dug deep to fund a package that would have made the Ireland winger the best-paid player in the club's history, only for the deal to fall through at the 11th hour.
