Wigan Athletic are threatening Middlesbrough's £1 million deal for Celtic defender Gary Caldwell.

The Herald says the same agreement was struck with the Premier League side and last night Celtic were simply waiting for that transfer to go through instead.

Caldwell and his agent were in negotiations with Wigan last night over a deal after Roberto Martinez, the manager, signed Ivory Coast international defender Steven Gohouri until the end of the season and decided he wanted the experienced Caldwell to play alongside him.
