Wigan target ex-Villa defender Bouma

Former Aston Villa defender Freddy Bouma is wanted at Wigan Athletic.

The Sunday Mirror says the 32 year-old Holland international was released by Aston Villa in June. He had struggled to regain his first team berth there after sustaining a serious ankle injury in April 2009.

Bouma has been training with PSV Eindhoven, his former club, during the summer. PSV sold him to Villa for £3.5 million five years ago and hope he will sign a new deal to join them on a free transfer this summer.

But Bouma has told PSV officials he would find it hard to resist staying in the English top flight. Even though Wigan have endured a nightmare start to the new season they may be able to persuade Bouma to add some experience and muscle to their rocky rearguard.
