Wigan skipper Caldwell excited Sunderland's Fletcher back for Scotland

Wigan Athletic skipper Gary Caldwell has welcomed Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher back into the Scotland.

Caldwell has revealed he planned to speak to his former Easter Road team-mate and urge him to end his self-imposed Scotland exile.

But now he's delighted gaffer Craig Levein didn't need his help.

Caldwell told the Scottish Sun: "We played against Sunderland last weekend and Fletch was their best player by far. He was their one and only threat on the day.

"If he can perform like that in the Premier League, then it's going to be a huge help to the national team.

"It's funny because I tried to see him after the game to speak about his situation with Scotland. I know him from our time together at Hibs and wanted to do my bit - but I didn't get the chance.

"He'd played so well he was Man of the Match and had to see the sponsors and do the Match of the Day bit.

"I'm just glad things have worked out anyway. Firstly, Fletch had to come out and say he wanted to play. Once he did that, the gaffer got him right back into the squad.

"And like he said last week, it was a no-brainer."
