Shaun Maloney is under an injury cloud for Scotland's final World Cup qualifier next month.
The Scots take on Croatia in Glasgow on October 14 in their last Group A fixture but could be without recent match-winner Maloney who has missed Wigan Athletic's past two outings because of a back problem.
Latics boss Owen Coyle said: "It's a source of frustration for Shaun and for me because he's an outstanding player.
"He tweaked his back when he went away with Scotland, although he played both games (against Belgium and Macedonia) and was their match-winner in the second one.
"He was scanned last week which showed a little irritation, and he'll see the specialist.
"We're hoping it's just the usual wear and tear you would expect from players over the age of 30 and, if he is out, it won't be for too long."
