Wigan newboy Sammon confident Latics can avoid relegation

Wigan Athletic recruit Conor Sammon is of firm belief that his new club can avoid the drop from the Premier League this season.

The 23-year old joined the Latics from Scottish club Kilmarnock, where he scored 15 goals in 19 league starts this season, in January and made his debut in the 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Saturday.

Sammon feels that the bottom-placed Latics are good enough to bounce back from their last two disappointing losses and pull themselves out of the relegation mire.

"It's definitely possible to stay up," he told the club's official website.

"We've got a confident bunch of lads here at the club and we take it one game at a time.

"I'm very confident I can help the team and provide some goals, and if I can do that I'll be delighted. I'm also very focused on the job in hand and I am eager to help the team progress up the league table."

Sammon's Premier League debut, coming on in the 84th minute of the Eastlands loss, almost yielded him with an injury-time equaliser but unfortunately his impressive piece of play ended with the ball edging just wide of the post when he had City keeper Joe Hart beaten.

He admitted it was a great feeling to get his top flight entrance out of the way so he can concentrate on helping the club move up the table in the business end of the season.

"When you get an opportunity off the bench it's a great chance to show what you can do and stake a claim for a permanent place, and I'm looking forward to the next game when I can hopefully I keep pushing," he added.

"We definitely have enough quality and fight in this side and I believe we can prove that by turning our good performances into positive results."
