Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy was happy with his performance in the Republic of Ireland's draw against World Cup qualifying opponents Sweden.

McCarthy was left out of the original starting line-up but played a starring role in a battling Irish performance in the Friends Arena.

McCarthy said: "I wanted to prove a point. I want to stay in the team but it is not about me it is about the team.

"It is up to the boss and I hope I can give him a headache. It is a massive point to come here and the way we did it is superb."
