Wigan Athletic have made a bid for Barnsley fullback John Stones.

The Latics are believed to have seen an opening offer knocked back by the Tykes earlier in the window.

Roberto Martinez is refusing to concede defeat in his efforts to bring Stones on board, though, and has returned to the negotiating table.

Wigan hope that improved terms will tempt Barnsley into a sale.
