Wigan legend De Zeeuw confident they can climb away from dropzone

Wigan Athletic legend Arjan de Zeeuw feels his old club can climb away from the foot of the table.

De Zeeuw, voted the club's all-time greatest player, says they must turn the ship around quickly - or risk being cut adrift before the New Year.

"The good thing is, if it's one thing Wigan know how to do, it's beat the drop," De Zeeuw told the Wigan Evening Post.

"They've been down there for the last few years and managed to survive each time, which should give them an advantage this time round.

"However, there is a real danger they could be cut adrift if they don't start winning games soon, and they have to put that right as soon as possible.

"It's a funny league this year. A lot of teams are taking points off each other, and Wigan have to start doing likewise.

"Christmas is only just around the corner, and you know what they say about the team that is bottom on Christmas Day.

"December looks to be a horrible month ahead, and you wouldn't be expecting to take much out of matches like that.

"That means they need to do something in the meantime if they are to stay in touch."
