Wigan land Zenit St Petersburg stopper Hagen

Wigan Athletic have signed Norway international defender Erik Hagen on-loan.

Hagen arrives at the JJB Stadium from Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg, subject to the club receiving international clearance.

The 32-year-old could make his debut against West Ham United this weekend and is due to link up with his new team-mates on Friday.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce is confident that Hagen will add a commanding presence to his back-line as he looks to keep the club in the Premier League.

"Erik is a player who lives to defend," Bruce told the club's official website. "He is an experienced international and is no stranger to the big occasion.

"He is aggressive, fantastic in the air and can read the game very well.

"He is a leader on the field and he will add tremendous competition at the back for us.

"I wouldn't have brought him here unless I thought he had the attributes to be a hit in the Premier League."
