James McCarthy hailed Wigan Athletic teammate Gary Caldwell's performance in their win over Liverpool.
Caldwell kept Reds ace Fernando Torres quiet over the 90 minutes.
Former Hamilton Accies kid McCarthy said: "Gary was different class against Fernando Torres.
"He's a world-class striker, but I don't think anyone was surprised how well Gary played him. Torres knew all about him with that first tackle. He was just letting him know he was there, but I don't think he forgot about him for the rest of the game.
"When he's on form Torres is unplayable, but Gaz had him in his pocket. You could see he was getting frustrated. He had a couple of digs at him, but that was because nothing was going his way.
"That performance has to give Gary confidence for Scotland's game with Spain later this year.
"Torres is always going to be one of the main threats to any side, but Gary proved he's more than capable of keeping him quiet."
