Wigan Athletic suffered their first defeat in Europe on Thursday night, going down 1-0 to Rubin Kazan in Russia.
The Latics, who had drawn two and won one of their opening three fixtures, dropped points for the first time but remain second on the Group D table with two matches remaining.
Oleg Kuzmin netted the only goal of the game, giving Rubin the ascendency in the 22nd minute, when he latched onto an aerial ball before firing home past European debutant Lee Nicholls in just his fifth start for Wigan.
The Latics had two great chances to equalise with Thomas Rogne's header hitting the bar and James McClean's gilt-edged effort going agonisingly close but in the end the Russian side were able to hold out for a win which sends them five points clear at the top of the table.
Wigan find themselves second on five points, one ahead of Belgian outfit Zulte-Waregem and two clear of NK Maribor, as they prepare for the November 28 visit of Zulte which could see them secure their spot in the Round of 32.
