Wigan Athletic defender Emmerson Boyce says Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole needs to reign in his tackling if he is to reach his potential.

Boyce said Cattermole's flaws were preventing him showing his potential.

He explained: "It's in his nature to want to make telling tackles, and the possibility of picking up a yellow card doesn't enter his head.

"That's good in one way but you must learn when to hold back. It comes with experience. He'll get better making those decisions."
