Wigan chief Spencer highlights work ethic of Everton boss Martinez

Wigan Athletic chief executive Brenda Spencer says there's no doubting the work ethic of new Everton manager Roberto Martinez.

Spencer oversaw Martinez's arrival at Wigan four years ago.

Brenda revealed to The Sun: "When we were looking for a new manager in 2009, there was only one man in owner Dave Whelan's mind - and that was Roberto.

"When we spoke to him about becoming manager, he said he was getting married next month.

"I asked where he was going on honeymoon and he just looked at me and said, 'There isn't one because pre-season is starting!'

"In the end, I think they got two days away and then he was down to Wigan, so that was where he spent his first week after being married.

"They were going to have a postponed honeymoon but I don't know if they ever did - he was just so committed and always working.

"Even in the close season he was working, preparing stuff, looking at players. Beth had to go along just so she could spend some time with him!"
