Wigan chairman to withdraw club if Premier League relegation is scrapped

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan says he will take his team back to the Football League if the Premier League decides to abolish relegation and promotion.

The notion has been talked about with some foreign owners of clubs hoping to alter the way England's top flight is run but it has been met with scorn by most including Latics owner Whelan.

"If it was to happen, I would resign Wigan from the Premier League and go back and play in the Football League," he told The Times.

"It's a worrying thought that if we get 14 or 15 foreign owners [in the Premier League], they come up with some mad idea and it gets voted through.

"It's got to be competitive; every club has to have that ambition to get to the Premier League, that's why our league is so good. It's an appalling suggestion.

"It would ruin and kill English football."
