Wigan chairman Whelan targets Man Utd coach Meulensteen

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan is making Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen his top choice to succeed Roberto Martinez.

The Daily Mail says the Dutchman, 49, has been Sir Alex Ferguson's first-team coach since 2007 but has been at the club since 2001 as a youth then reserve team coach.

Incoming Manchester United manager David Moyes offered Meulensteen the option of staying on at the club, but he was keen top have another shot at management.
