Wigan chairman Whelan: Sunderland gaffed in O'Neill sacking

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan says Sunderland gaffed in sacking Martin O'Neill.

Whelan is convinced relegation rivals Sunderland made a mistake in axing O'Neill and has urged owners and chairmen to follow his lead and take a more hands-on role.

Whelan told the Daily Star: "What is happening is sometimes a little disturbing. Managers are being chopped at the drop of a hat.

"I don't think that's the right way. The lad at Sunderland, I don't think he deserved that. They'd had injuries like we have.

"It's the foreign owners that seem to be of the opinion that if the team is not playing well it's the manager's fault and that's not necessarily the case."
