Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has congratulated Derby County on their appointment of Paul Jewell as new manager.

"What Paul did for this club was fantastic and we will never forget it," he said. "Given the contribution he and Chris Hutchings made together, it is unlikely we would have had such success had it not been for their enthusiasm, energy and man-management.

"We wish Paul all the best in his new job and I'm sure he will do a great job for Derby."
