Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez feels the versatile Paul Scharner is at his best at centre-half.
Martinez believes the 33-year-old has found his ideal role after playing just about everywhere else on the pitch for Wigan and in a two-year stint at West Brom.
"As a centre half, he is one of the best in Europe when he is fully focused," said the Wigan manager, who admits it is likely that Scharner will go back to Hamburg at the end of the season. "I always felt it was his best position on the football pitch.
"His old team are going to see a very different player to the one who played there because he's a very mature player who has a strong desire to help the team keep a clean sheet rather than helping in an attacking sense like he used to."
