Aston Villa were willing to TREBLE Roberto Martinez's wages for him to leave Wigan Athletic.
The Mirror says the Spaniard pledged his future to delighted owner Dave Whelan in a summit meeting and left Villa managerless and in a major crisis.
Martinez signed a new three-year deal with the Latics after whirlwind talks following his decision.
He will pick up around £1.2million-a-year plus bonuses, but that is much less that he could be earning from Villa.
In his protracted negotiations with Villa, Martinez was eventually offered a basic salary of around £2million - which is three times the guaranteed terms he was on at the DW Stadium.
