Wigan boss Martinez open to signing permanently Moreno

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez remains keen on the possibility of hanging on to striker Marcelo Moreno, who joined in January on a six-month loan from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Bolivian has yet to find the net during his 12 appearances, and looks to have played his last game of the season after picking up a calf injury at West Ham. But Martinez has been impressed with the 22-year-old's overall contribution, and aims to persuade him to stay in England.

He told the Wigan Evening Post: "Marcelo has brought something in to the squad that we were missing, something different.

"He has felt really comfortable at the club. I think he has been very unfortunate not to score goals, because he has had a few great opportunities. He is still a young man, and we will sit down with him over the next few weeks and see what he thinks.

"He has put in a lot of effort and a lot of hard work, and has helped us in a number of ways."

A deal is already in place for the player who was linked with Tottenham before moving to the Ukraine.

And Martinez revealed: "We have got an option that gives us control over him. The exact details need to be finalised with Shakhtar, and he remains their player. And we have to remember they paid around 12m euros when they signed him a couple of years ago, so the finances of the deal would have to be right for us."
