Wigan boss Martinez: Man Utd's Rooney excellent at Real Madrid

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez heaped praise on Wayne Rooney for his performance in Manchester United's draw at Champions League opponents Real Madrid.

Martinez felt Rooney's game displayed great "intelligence" on the night.

He told Absolute Radio: " I think you mentioned Rooney, I don't think there are many players that can adapt so much in the needs of a game. I think it's very unfair, the criticism is very unfair because obviously it's starting to judge a player on what he does in front of goal or if there's any actions that they're going to get into the highlights package.

"I think what Wayne Rooney brought at the Bernabéu was a real intelligence, a real work rate for the team and forcing Real Madrid to change their normal approach with Cristiano Renaldo on the left hand side where he had to play on the right hand side and overall that gives a little bit of momentum to Manchester United and that's down to world class players that they are prepared to work for the team and put their role for the others." Martinez was talking to Absolute Radio Rock N Roll Football host Ian Wright. For more, visit absoluteradio.co.uk/football.
