Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is happy over his relationship with chairman Dave Whelan.

Last March at the start of the run-in, Whelan admitted on radio that he planned to grill Martinez on his team selection after they lost at home to Swansea. Most managers would have erupted in anger at that "interference" - but Martinez reckons it's no big deal.

"I think that is the way he is," Martinez said. "My chairman is a very honest man and he will tell you how he feels. He is a unique man and has a very strong opinion on football because he has played the game and been a chairman at every level.

"He came to see me on Monday morning after the Swansea game as he always does so it wasn't anything different.

"He wanted to know why certain players weren't playing. We sit down, he will ask things about the performance, I will l give him my answers and then he will agree or disagree.

"But that is our relationship and I want it to be like that. And if that is unique between manager and chairman, it is a real shame.

" I never see it as interference. He does his job in a very open manner. If you ask him a question he will answer you - there are no grey areas."
