Wigan boss Martinez explains M'Bami offer

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez admits he was left disappointed at not dealing in Modeste M'Bami last week.

M'Bami has since signed with Almeria in Spain and Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post: "M'Bami was looking for a longer contract than we were in a position to offer him. He has got another two or three options, and it looks like he'll be taking one of them.

"It has been great for everyone at Wigan Athletic to have him training with us.

"He has got great standards, he is a great character, and we wish him well."

However, Martinez insists the decision to bring the player over was still a worthwhile experiment, given his proven pedigree.

"It works both ways," the Spaniard continued.

"We had to invest plenty of time in Modeste just to be fair to him, because fitness-wise he wasn't up to the standards we look for.

"Ultimately it has to be something that works for both Wigan Athletic and himself, but we're quite strong in that department and in terms of the long-term we couldn't really do anything that would satisfy him."
