Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez admits he saw John Stones as a long-term signing prospect.

Stones chose Everton ahead of Latics on transfer deadline day.

Martinez said: "One of the big signings we were trying was for the future. I don't think that signing would have affected our results to the end of the season."
