Wigan boss Hutchings demands ref trials

Wigan Athletic boss Chris Hutchings wants match officials to undergo trial by TV.

Hutchings thinks it is unfair that managers and players can be banned for arguing or commenting about dodgy calls while the officials can escape without even explaining their actions.

And he is demanding that the men in black come out of the shadows and into the TV spotlight.

Hutchings rapped: "I don't see why referees and their assistants should not have to air their views and justify their decisions. If they say they have made a genuine mistake and hold their hands up you would understand it.

"It's about being brave. At the moment we - the bosses and players - are the ones who get into trouble. We get sent to the stands. What happens to them?

"I don't want to embarrass them, but if as a manager your job is on the line and a decision goes against you there is a lot riding on it."

Hutchings wants an improvement in standards and more accountability.

He said: "Referees have got to learn they can't keep making mistakes."

Wigan got into trouble with the FA for protesting to Steve Bennett in the Newcastle game and Hutchings has told his players to cut that out.

But he added: "My players are winners, so the first reaction is to bite."
