Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce wants Ecuador midfielder Luis Valencia to improve his scoring record.

Bruce told the Wigan Post: "Valencia is an extremely talented player and when I arrived at the club, I rated him as one of our best players.

"He is vital to us, a real threat down the right, but the one thing we need to work on is his goalscoring.

"You're looking for your wide players to chip in with five, six or seven goals a season, and that's what we would like from Valencia.

"He maybe doesn't look as clinical as he could when he gets into a shooting position and that's something we can have a look at in training.

"We know the lad is capable of scoring. How unlucky was he not to score against West Ham when his shot hit both posts?"
