Wigan boss Bruce tribute to chairman Whelan

Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce paid tribute to chairman Dave Whelan after their victory over Hull City.

"We've got to keep our feet on the ground," Bruce said.

"It's been a great start and all season we've been competitive and given the big teams a real run for their money. We've got five or six of the bottom teams (to play), which of course will be difficult but they are games we can get points from. So it's all to play for, happy days.

"It's an unbelievable success story. When the chairman bought (the club) in 1995, it was a ramshackle old stadium with 1200 people and he said then that he wanted to play in the Premier League.

"Everyone thought he was nuts and now he has said he wants to finish in Europe. Who knows - it could be his year. He deserves it, the club has come a long way.

"We won't get carried away but we've got some good players here and we've proved it again today."
