Wigan boss Steve Bruce was disappointed to hear of Roy Keane's resignation from Sunderland yesterday.

Bruce has remained in touch with his former Manchester United team-mate since their days together at Old Trafford and was taken by surprise by the news.

He said: "Football is a better place when Roy is in it. He is a great football person. I know he loves football and it beats him up when he loses.

"I hope he takes a break and comes back, which I am sure he will do. I like him and wish him well as I always admired him as a player."
