Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce has held talks with Scottish agent Willie McKay about his plans for the winter market.
Wigan Observer says McKay met with Steve Bruce at Christopher Park last Wednesday - and offered him left-back David Murphy.
Bruce admits a left-back is his number one priority and is keen on Murphy, 23, who will command a £1m transfer fee.
The Hartlepool-born ace is under contract until 2010 and is into his fourth season at Easter Road, having been released by Middlesbrough.
Hibs manager John Collins said: "He is a quality footballer and I am sure that there will come a time when we receive an offer that we can't refuse.
"We have got to be realistic. I could say that David Murphy is going nowhere but we all know that is not the case.
"The lad comes from England and has always said that he would like to go back there eventually.
"He is an ambitious boy and wants to play at the highest level possible and I can understand that."
