Wigan boss Bruce: Dugarry was the best

Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce says Christophe Dugarry at former club Birmingham City was his greatest signing.

"I signed him for the price of a Rich Tea biscuit," Bruce told the Daily Mail. "An agent phoned me and said: 'I can get you Dugarry'. I'd watched him at the World Cup Final about six months earlier and I said: 'Oh right, get him over, then', - not believing a bloody word of it.

"Anyway, he did. I took him to my house. I gave him a cup of tea, a few biscuits and the tape of that Villa game. I told him: 'You will be a star here'.

"I said: 'Come, give me a hand'. He did. In his first training session, he pulled the ball out of the sky with his left foot and smashed it into the net with his right on the volley from 25 yards. Horsfield started clapping. I joined in! We looked at each other and said: 'Bloody hell, what's this?'"

"There was one match in particular. One Easter Monday against Southampton. Everyone knows how much I think of Eric Cantona, but Christophe was the man that day. A truly wonderful performance. He ran the game from start to finish. I never saw Trevor Francis at his peak, but for this generation of Blues' fans they will struggle to see better. He could have played for any team in the world."
