Steve Bruce has denied speculation linking him with a transfer window move for Didier Domi, who is currently with Greek champions Olympiakos.
Chairman Dave Whelan is ready to back his manager with the funds he requires in January, and Bruce has highlighted the need for a left-back.
Kevin Kilbane, who is more of a left winger, filled in at the back against Manchester City on Saturday but a long-term solution is needed.
French full-back Domi has had previous spells in England with Newcastle and Leeds - but Bruce has denied that the player is a target for the club.
"We are looking to bring a left-back in but there is nothing in that name," Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post.
