Why Spurs clash perfect shop window for BVB stars Gundogan, Aubameyang

Tottenham are going to have to organise a wing-talk, if they're to see off Borussia Dortmund this week.

The Premier League title challengers tend to play through their flying wing-backs, placing such an emphasis on the role that the poor mites picked in that position have to be rotated every game.

And that will almost certainly be the case for the Lilywhites' trip to Germany, after their domestic draw with Arsenal rendered the Europa League even more of a hindrance.

But that switch – bringing in Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies in place of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose – could leave Spurs vulnerable in a dangerous position.

For it is in the wide positions that Dortmund thrive when on the attack.

BVB, also second in their national league, and fresh from a draw with a fellow title challenger, are spearheaded by the impressively dynamic Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is able to drift wide and then drive at goal.

Key creative players such as Marco Reus, Shinji Kagawa and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – who has hit the woodwork as many times as the rest of the teams in the Europa League combined this season – also utilise the flanks during their probing of opposition defences.

Coach Thomas Tuchel will be wary of Tottenham as an opponent and will entrust midfield lynchpin Ilkay Gundogan on enforcing some discipline in possession.

The German international is set to depart Dortmund this summer, ending a five-year association, with Manchester City desperate for him to stabilise their often erratic midfield with some classy composure.

Similarly in the shop window will be Aubameyang, who has matched the prolific Robert Lewandowski stride-for-stride in the scoring stakes for most of the season.

The Gabonese goal-getter has notched 29 in 31 games, with his Polish rival on 33 in 36.

He will prove a real test for what is likely to be a second-string backline composed of the likes of Kevin Wimmer.

Watching him dance by his marker has been one of the themes of the Bundesliga season, and Tottenham will do well to keep him quiet.

But there will be challenges all over the park for the English visitors, as Dortmund are now very much prioritising success in this competition.

Meaning their leading lights will be on best behaviour for the visiting scouts.
