Why Rodgers must act fast to land Liverpool mad Kristoffer Ajer

Kristoffer Ajer. Are you watching Liverpool?

A record breaker at IK Start. For many, regarded a bigger talent than Real Madrid's superkid Martin Odegaard. And he's made it clear, the 17 year-old is Liverpool mad. He'd love to play for the Reds some day.

Line 'em up. Europe's biggest clubs have been chasing this teenage powerhouse since he became IK Start's youngest ever debutant last year. Ajax, Tottenham, PSG, Roma, Arsenal... and his beloved Liverpool have all been mentioned as serious destinations for Ajer.

"It's a dream to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world," he says.

"Liverpool has always been the favorite team of mine, but I would not ignore other teams to wait for 'the big deal' from Liverpool."

Brendan Rodgers, you've been warned.

"Look, anything can happen," continues Ajer. "I could get injured tomorrow. Or I could have a wonderful career, with fans singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' while I stand on the pitch at Anfield."

As Ajer admits, he's not about to hang around hoping Rodgers puts in a call. Before Christmas, Ajer had a training stint with Roma - and enjoyed the experience.

"The Roma training stay gave me a nice indication of what I need to improve on. I need to improve everything to become a top international player."

But at 17 years of age and standing at 196cm, the potential is obvious.

Start coach Mons Ivar Mjelde has no doubts about Ajer, rating him the best young prospect he's seen.

"He works hard every single day. The way he manages to take new steps is incredibly impressive," says Mjelde.

"I have not trained a better 17-year-old.

"Ajer can be as good as he wants to be."

Start teammates also recognise something special, with striker Matthias Vilhjalmsson admitting he's proud to have said he's played in the same team.

"I am proud to play with him. Kristoffer is fantastic," says Vilhjalmsson, 28.

"I wouldn't begrudge him any success that comes his way. He is a great role model for all young footballers in Norway."

Stabaek winger Ernest Asante, who played with Ajer last season, also says: "He works hard and deserves success. Ajer is a brilliant player."

Start veteran Jesper Mathisen says the locker room accepts Ajer will soon be on his way to bigger things.

"We'll just enjoy the time we have with Ajer at Start. He's got to be one of the most coveted players around," says Mathisen.

The crazy thing is, Ajer actually fell into Start's lap. If not for a job opportunity for his father in Kristiansand, Ajer would be turning out for Lillestrom.

This all occurred over a year ago - and Kristoffer was not happy. It took some persuading from his parents to accept the family's move. But looking back now, Ajer admits things could not have worked out better.

"I do not think there is any place in the world that is better than Start for me now. I feel absolutely amazing in Start," he says.

"I get to play and develop myself quickly. This past year has been fantastic."

Along with the Roma tests, the offers flooded in for Ajer during the summer market.

"It's a miracle he's still with us," admits Mathisen.

But Ajer feels he owes Start to see out the season. The midfielder is desperate to lift them out of the dropzone, with the club currently second from bottom.

"I will see out this season with Start. I cannot leave this club now that we are in the situation we are in," says the teen.

"I signed up to fight to keep this club up."

With the Tippeliga season in Norway concluding before Christmas, Ajer will be among the hottest transfer properties for the January market.

He's caught the bug - seeing fellow prospects Martin Odegaard and Martin Samuelson move to respectively Real Madrid and West Ham United this year is acting as "inspiration".

"It is wonderful inspiration," smiles Ajer. "They're performing at the top level in the world. It is a big achievement."

And Ajer, come the New Year, is sure to follow. He wants Liverpool. He's made that clear. It's now up to Rodgers to make another of Kristoffer Ajer's dreams come true.
