Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan is full of pride after reaching the FA Cup final.

Whelan watched nervously as manager Roberto Martinez masterminded the 2-0 win over Millwall to set up a May 11 showdown against Manchester City or Chelsea.

"This is the best day of my career as chairman," said Whelan. "When we walk out for the final it’s going to be really special because even if it’s the new Wembley, I know exactly which part of the pitch I broke my leg. It finished my career in the top flight.

"Millwall played better than us for parts of the second half today but we’ve made history. I had a dream we’d beat Everton, which we did, and then play Manchester City in the final.

"But we’ve got a fight on to stay in the Premier League, and lads all know that. It’s massively important with the extra money that is coming in. Everyone said we’d last a year and go down. But we’ve stuck it out for eight."
