Westwood: Derby was a Cup final for Sunderland

Sunderland goalkeeper Kieren Westwood says their derby win over Newcastle United was like a Cup final.

Sunderland were rewarded with a 2-1 triumph at the Stadium of Light that saw them move off the foot of the table.

"This wasn't about being bottom of the league or conceding however many or having one point," said the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper.

"This was about Newcastle versus Sunderland. It was massive, it was a cup final. We had to go out and enjoy it and have no regrets because there's been a few from the team this season.

"Form goes out of the window. This game was all about that 95 minutes and thankfully we came out on top.

"It's a good start, we're off the bottom and onwards and upwards now. Our situation's still dire, we're not getting carried away.

"But we worked our socks off and we got our just rewards really."
