West Ham's Spector hoping to keep place

After scoring his first goal in a West Ham shirt, USA international defender Jonathan Spector hopes he's staked a first team claim for the coming season.

Spector began the game against Norwich at left-back before switching to right-back for the second half when George McCartney came on to replace Lucas Neill, and boss Alan Curbishley will have made a mental note of the 22-year-old's versatility in defensive positions.

"I hope so," the former Manchester United youngster told whufc.com. "There is a lot of competition for places here now, particularly in defensive areas, and it can only be good for the Club.

"I'm just happy to do a job for the team in whichever way I can, and hopefully I can prove to the manager that I am worthy of a place in the starting line-up."
