West Ham target Drinkwater as Chelsea in advanced Vecino talks

West Ham are targeting Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater.

The Mirror says West Ham are hoping Inter Milan succeed with their bid to land Luka Modric — so that they can sign Drinkwater from Chelsea.

The Serie A giants have offered Modric, voted the best player at this summer's World Cup as he helped Croatia make a surprise run to the final, a lucrative deal in a bid to tempt him away from Real Madrid.

Should they succeed in signing Modric, 33 this month, it could spark a domino effect.

Chelsea are trying to land the Italians' Matias Vecino for new boss Maurizio Sarri, who knows the 26-year-old from managing Serie A rivals Napoli for the past three seasons.

And the FA Cup holders will only let England midfielder Drinkwater leave - subject to a loan fee of around £3m - if his £130,000-a-week wages are met.
