West Ham striker McCarthy axed from World Cup over partying claims

West Ham United striker Benni McCarthy is at the centre of controversy over his World Cup axing.

The Sun says McCarthy was axed from South Africa's World Cup squad after allegedly 'entertaining' women in his room while the team were in camp.

South African media reports claim the West Ham striker, 32, angered boss Carlos Alberto Parreira after he and keeper Rowen Fernandez held a 4am party with 'some company'.

Parreira was shown CCTV footage of the duo and swiftly dropped them from the team.

McCarthy had already upset medical staff because he was said to be nowhere near peak condition.

South Africa's trainer Francisco Gonzalez claimed: "Benni's percentage body fat is high."
