West Ham are on red alert after Mario Gomez announced he won't be returning to Besiktas this season.

The political unrest in Turkey has convinced the Fiorentina-owned striker to look elsewhere for the new campaign.

Gomez has been linked with the Hammers and their interest is now expected to intensify.

"It was a difficult decision that I had to think much about. I have to say to you Besiktas fans personally that it is very hard for me because I will no longer play for this great club in front of you wonderful fans in this unique stadium," Gomez posted to Instagram.

"This is entirely due to the political situation."
