West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan was buoyed after German midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger signed a three-year deal with the club.

The 28-year old joined the Hammers as a free agent after leaving Italian club Lazio and as the club’s first summer signing he has put a spring in the step of Sullivan.

“I am delighted to welcome Thomas to the club,” he told the club’s official website.

“We had to move quickly to secure his services when he became available, especially as there was understandably so much interest in him from around Europe and back in Germany.

“I am especially pleased that he is excited by what we are trying to achieve here at West Ham.”

Hitzlsperger returns to the Premier League where he first played with Aston Villa in between 2001 and 2005 before moving back to Germany with Stuttgart and onto Lazio earlier this year.
