Former England and West Ham midfielder Sir Trevor Brooking has told BBC Radio 5 live that the club did not sign Joey Barton because of the emergence of Reece Oxford and the Hammers' exit from the Europa League.
"They went out of the Europa League which was quite a key factor. They might not need the depth of squad because they haven't got those number of European matches in the next few weeks," he said.
"They played at Arsenal, their build up wasn't great and to win there 2-0, with Reece Oxford in midfield, was terrific.
"Suddenly you think do we need another midfielder and we must use him wisely. Priority is probably a striker and wide player."
